The Fonias Gorge
A few kilometers past the village of Therma, you will find the path leading to the Fonias Gorge. Following the path for about half an hour through lush vegetation, you will reach the first impressive natural pool and a waterfall. The cold, clear waters of the pool provide a refreshing relief and are ideal for swimming, even if you are not a nature enthusiast.
If you are looking for more tranquility, avoid visiting in August, as the gorge becomes a popular attraction for most island visitors during that time.
“Swimming under the waterfalls of Fonias is a unique and unforgettable experience, a true connection with the natural beauty of Samothrace.”
For the more adventurous, exploring the next pools increases the level of difficulty. The second pool requires an uphill path, while the third, which hosts the largest waterfall of the gorge at about 35 meters high, is a challenge for more experienced hikers. In any case, swimming in the pools of Fonias is a once-in-a-lifetime experience not to be missed.
